Nineteen (Album)

My first produced composition and music video – a collaboration with over 20 fantastic musicians

In my final year at the New England Conservatory, I spent six months on a project that ultimately became my capstone project for graduating. I got to step into the role of bandleader, coordinator, producer, and creative collaborator. This project was the manifestation of so much vision, logistics, and joyful obsession.

As composer, producer, director, and performer, I worked with over twenty incredible musicians through visionboarding, rehersals, and studio sessions. This work was a delivate weave of jazz harmony, orchestral strings, intricate rhythms, and with an epic solo where I got to shred!

The first night I heard the raw mix, I couldn’t sleep. I replayed it endlessly, swept with excitement.

The Music Video

It was a lot of fun to drive around Medford and Somerville Massachusettes to capture footage in a budget-friendly maner, we literally sprinted a mile with our equipment to get the sunset shot towards the end!

The Process

Below, I will share a bit more about the process that led up to this creation

First, is two explorations of violin layering, the second of which became the seed for the entire piece. I was encouraged by my teacher at the time to keep developing it. And so I did. The process: I played with midi stems in Logic X on my computer, and then would record violin layers after I settled on interesting harmonies to explore.

Nineteen Intro Precursor Explorations (3.1.20) The original 3.1.20 explorations with violin layering that became Nineteen's intro

Eventually, through much iteration, the intro was completed, and a whole new song spun out of it. The main track became a fun exploration of harmony, rhythm, form, and groove. Below is a rendition with the pianist and bassest who recorded on the final production in studio.
